Eat pomegranate fruit on the first day. The pain vanishes like magic. I can vouch for it. I have been recommending this to every girl I meet. This is a suggestion from my mom - she had read about it somewhere.

I used to get severe cramps as a teenager.
In my experience, ensuring that I ate well - especially wrt iron and VItamin B complex, which I would also supplement to make sure I got enough - and exercised, I did not get menstrual cramps.

To get more iron, I eat ragi, leafy greens, chiku, dates, molasses, and also cook in iron vessels. And for B vitamins, nuts, whole grains (not white / refined grains).
