Religious Myth

Why are women not allowed to go to temple / do any form of offerings to the God during their periods? A reason often heard is "They are impure during that period, hence they better stay out of it" Can you tell me the scientific relation if any to it. If this one form of taboo is proved wrong. A lot of the others would automatically be waved off.
